At Howze Dental Group, we know that the thought of tooth extraction can make some people nervous. However, in some cases, a simple tooth extraction may be necessary to protect your overall oral health. Whether you’re dealing with a damaged tooth, an infection, or other dental issues, we’re here to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible.
What is a Simple Tooth Extraction?
A simple tooth extraction is a routine procedure where a tooth is removed from its socket in the jawbone. This type of extraction is usually done when a tooth is severely decayed or damaged or has a tooth infection that can’t be treated with a root canal. A simple extraction involves a tooth easily seen in the mouth and does not require cutting into the gum or bone.
Simple extractions are typically quick. We perform the procedure right in our office with local anesthesia. This will make sure you feel no pain. After the extraction, we’ll give you detailed instructions on how to care for the area to help with the healing process.
Why Might a Tooth Need to Be Extracted?
There are a few reasons why a simple tooth extraction may be necessary:
- Severe Tooth Decay: When a tooth has too much decay for a filling or crown, your dentist may need to remove it.
- Infection: Removal may be the best option if you have an infected tooth.
- Crowded Teeth: In some cases, a dentist may need to remove teeth to make room for orthodontic treatment, such as braces.
- Gum Disease: If gum disease has caused a tooth to loosen or become unstable, you may need an extraction to prevent further issues.
The Tooth Extraction Process
Before the extraction, Dr. Howze or Dr. Scott will examine the tooth and the surrounding area. They will take X-rays to make sure that the tooth is in a position that will make the extraction as easy as possible. Once they have all the information needed, they will numb the area with local anesthesia so you won’t feel any pain.
During the procedure, the dentist will gently loosen the tooth using special instruments and then remove it from its socket. The process is usually quick and can take just a few minutes, depending on the tooth. The dentist may place a gauze pad over the area to help control any bleeding after removing the tooth.
After the Extraction
After a simple tooth extraction, it’s normal to feel some soreness or swelling around the extraction site. We will give you detailed instructions on how to care for the area, including tips on managing pain and preventing infection.
Some helpful tips for recovery include:
- Resting: Take it easy for the rest of the day after the extraction.
- Avoiding Straws: Don’t use a straw for at least 24 hours after the procedure, as sucking can disturb the blood clot and slow healing.
- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the outside of your mouth can help reduce swelling and discomfort.
- Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain medications can help manage any pain you may feel after the extraction. We’ll also recommend any prescription medications if needed.
It’s important to follow all aftercare instructions carefully to prevent complications and help the area heal properly.
